Whitehaven Beach voted the best beach in the South Pacific

Whitehaven Beach

Whitehaven Beach in the Whitsundays has yet again been voted ‘Best Beach in Australia’ and ‘Best Beach in the South Pacific’ in the 2016 TripAdvisor Traveller’s Choice Awards.

The seven-kilometre stretch of white silica sands and crystal clear waters is unsurpassed, taking out the number one spot for the fourth consecutive year in a row.  Voters agreed the beach is not only beautiful, but also a pristine natural landscape, free from crowds and untouched by development.

Whitehaven Beach is located on Whitsunday Island, the largest of the 74 islands in the spectacular Whitsundays region and part of the Whitsunday Islands National Park. Known as the heart of the Great Barrier Reef, the Whitsundays is world-famous for its clear aqua waters and iconic landscapes such as Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet, and the perfectly shaped Heart Reef.

A long-time favourite with travellers of all ages and types, Whitehaven Beach is the perfect place to relax and explore the tropical island environment.  With its brilliant white, 98% silica sands protecting bare feet from the heat of the sun, visitors can walk, swim, snorkel and sail from the beach. It is a must-do experience in the Whitsundays, and an essential bucket list item for travellers all around the world.

The clear waters also mean marine life is clearly visible in the shallows, with sea turtles, countless species of fish, and stingray sighted regularly. At the northern end of the beach is Hill Inlet, a stunning cove where the tide shifts the sand and the water to create a beautiful, swirling fusion of colours. A short but beautiful walk through the tropical rainforest of Whitsunday Island leads to a spectacular lookout over Hill Inlet and down the length of Whitehaven Beach, this view being the third most popular iconic photo of Australia after Sydney Harbour and Uluru.

At the southern end of the beach are striking rock formations and fringing coral reefs, as well as facilities for day visitors including toilets. Overnight campers can stay in allocated camping spots on Whitehaven Beach with a permit, and have it all to themselves once the sun sets.
